CBHRI Launches New Research Program: Microplastics & Public Health

New Research Program: Microplastics & Public Health in the Dutch Caribbean

Willemstad, Curaçao – June 2025

The Curaçao Biomedical & Health Research Institute (CBHRI) proudly announces the launch of a new research program focused on the health impact of microplastics in the Dutch Caribbean.

While plastic pollution has long been recognized as an environmental threat, growing concern is now turning to its potential effects on human health. Microplastics — particles smaller than 5 millimeters — can enter the body through air, water, food, and even personal care products. However, data on local exposure and health effects in the Dutch Caribbean remain virtually nonexistent.

With this initiative, CBHRI aims to:

  • Generate local data on human microplastic exposure

  • Investigate links between microplastics and health effects such as inflammation, toxicity, and endocrine disruption

  • Collaborate with regional and international partners in public health and waste management

  • Contribute to prevention strategies and evidence-based policy

“Plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue — it is a public health concern. This research will help close critical data gaps and inform regional action,” said Eurydice Martina, Project manager and Head of Capital Management at CBHRI.

CBHRI is actively seeking research collaborations and funding opportunities for this program. Interested partners are invited to get in touch.
